Support of Ukraine

We are all in shock and deeply saddened by the Russian government’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in the heart of Europe.

We strongly condemn these atrocious actions by Putin and his regime and send our support, wishes, and compassion to the Ukrainian people, our Ukrainian colleagues, and our Ukrainian friends. They are now fighting for their lives, their country, their culture, their history and their freedom. We stand by your side.

Our support also extends to our Russian and Belarusian colleagues and friends who are as appalled by the actions of their governments as we are. Your courage will make a difference. We stand with you in this as well.

International collaboration is one of the key elements in our daily lives as scientists, and many of us have friends and colleagues across the globe. We all know that science brings people and cultures together, and in this unity, there is strength.

As yHEP, we would like to make you aware of the possibilities to help the Ukrainian people in this challenging time, either through your collaboration at work, through organisations such as CERN, or through donations, to mention a few. We are collecting links, where you can find more information. Please also feel free to get in contact with us at yhep-info[at]desy.de.

Survey of BMBF

The BMBF is conducting a survey (German, English) regarding the evaluation of the framework programme “ErUM - Exploring Universe and Matter”. yHEP encourages you to participate in the survey! Below you can find the official accompanying letters of the BMBF in German and English.

KET

Survey on "Career paths in particle physics in Germany"

A survey on "Career paths in particle physics in Germany" was conducted among those who have taken up a permanent position in particle physics in Germany since 2010 by the committee for particle physics in Germany (KET).
The results can be found here. The document is intended to support young scientists in planning their careers and experienced scientists in promoting young scientists. Happy reading!

RECFA Visit

European Committee for future accelerators (RECFA) visited Germany, on 1 April 2022 in Berlin. yHEP was included with a presentation on Perspective of Young Scientists. Resulting statements from the RECFA visit include Executive summary and Letter. The recommendations in relation to young researchers are:

  • Keep number of PhD students with adequate salaries (i.e. increase funding accordingly)
  • Measures to increase the number of permanent scientist positions at universities

KAT

Deutsches Zentrum für Astrophysik (DZA)

The "Deutsches Zentrum für Astrophysik - Forschung. Technologie. Digitalisierung. (DZA)" has been selected to be realised in the national "Wissen schafft Perspektiven für die Region“ programme for Saxonia. DZA will be a research centre endowed with the typical budget of a national research centre. It will be the first national centre dedicated to astrophysics - and to astroparticle physics as well - in Germany, and it will substantially foster research in these fields.

Please find more details at DZA and BMBF.

KHuK

yHEP communication with Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee (NuPECC)

yHEP wrote a letter to chair of NuPECC, proposing to also include representatives from young researchers in their committee, which was positively received. yHEP submitted contribution for NuPECC Long Range Plan (LRP) 2024:

  • Inclusion of direct representatives of early career researchers in NuPECC
  • Support the establishment of more groups like yHEP in other European states
  • Establish working groups with young researchers within NuPECC

KHuK brochure

yHEP is involved in the update of the KHuK brochure with chapters about education of young researchers and sustainability in science. The KHuK brochure will be soon published.
